The man, between 20 and 30 years old, was arrested in absentia overnight on Monday and taken into custody that afternoon.
He was arrested without incident in Skellefteå municipality. Nyström stated that this does not appear to be a stranger rape, as the individuals are believed to have been together prior to the incident.
At around 11:00 on Tuesday, Nyström said the suspect was still being questioned and had not yet been properly interviewed. Before the weekend, a prosecutor will decide whether to remand the man in custody or release him.
The victim did not require medical care for injuries, but evidence was secured at the hospital.
Nyström said that while she is doing "relatively well physically," such an experience would, of course, leave someone "shaken and in shock."
The cordon in Skelleftehamn has been lifted, and the police investigation is ongoing. They are conducting interviews with the suspect and witnesses and analyzing the evidence collected.
The case was initially classified as aggravated rape and the police have seen no reason to change that classification.
