UPDATE: 12:20
According to Skellefteå Kraft's website about 20 power outages occurred during last night's thunderstorm.
Between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m., a total of 9,200 households were without power, said Emil Tjärnström, a communications strategist at Skellefteå Kraft.
As of now, 84 households are still without electricity.
The most widespread outage appears to have been in the Kåge area, where nearly 3,000 households were left without electricity for just over ten minutes.
However, the southern part of the municipality seems to have been the hardest hit. Over 700 households in villages between Lövånger, Burträsk, and Bureå were without power for two to three hours.
Shortly after midnight, Skellefteå Kraft issued a warning on its website: “Thunderstorms are currently active, which can lead to flashes and both short-term and long-term power outages in the area. The increased risk of power outages mainly applies to Vallen and Önnesmark.”
There were also longer outages north of Jörn, where over 350 households were without electricity for 1.5 hours. The villages of Stensträsk and Kåtaselet have not yet had their power restored.
More than 20 households in Ålund outside Byske are still without power. This also applies to a few households in Storselet outside Boliden, where a transformer exploded.
– The lightning struck the transformer, and it will need to be replaced. That's a job that will take a few hours. This has affected two of our customers, says Emil Tjärnström from Skellefteå Kraft.
When the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) issues warnings, Skellefteå Kraft prepares by deploying extra personnel or repositioning staff to fix operational disruptions as quickly as possible.
– We monitor the weather in real time, and our operations managers decide how many extra managers and personnel are needed. This applies to thunderstorms, snowstorms, and any other weather that might cause disruptions. The amount of extra staff we need to deploy varies greatly. For example, during last week's thunderstorm, we moved personnel from inland areas to the coast to be prepared, says Anders Hedlund, head of Skellefteå Kraft's local network.
UPDATE: 09:20
At midnight, a building in Yttervik was completely destroyed by a fire. Shortly after, at 1:30 a.m., a transformer in a power line outside Boliden exploded.
The incident caused about 20 power outages for Skellefteå Kraft customers. The company's operations page reported that more than 9,200 households were affected in total. While most outages were brief, some lasted for several hours.
Around 50 households are still without power in specific villages near Lövånger, Byske, Kåge, Boliden, and Jörn.
Additionally, reports from Skelleftehamn indicate that roads have been flooded due to heavy rain.
Although the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) had issued a thunderstorm warning for strong winds, there have been no reports of traffic disruptions caused by fallen trees.
