It was at 19.51 on Wednesday evening that the emergency call was made to SOS Alarm, the caller stating that hazardous had been released at Northvolt. The emergency services turned out to Northvolt's industrial area with a large number of vehicles.
It turned out to be a local discharge of 300 litres of sulphuric acid in liquid form and the emergency services assisted with the aid of protective clothing to secure the premises which is stated as belonging to Revolt.
– The people who were there working on site were probably doing some form of dismantling of the facilities, says Ulf Gille at the emergency services.
The sulphuric acid emits gas that is hazardous to inhale. Consequences may be burning, irritation as well as cough and difficulty in breathing. There is also a risk of corrosion to eyes, nose, mouth and throat. In serious cases you may suffer lung oedema, liquid in the lungs.
– One person has inhaled these fumes and has been taken to hospital, says Ulf Gille. The current situation for that person is unknown.
They have managed to gather all the other staff together. It is unclear how many of them were in the premises at the time.
The emergency services diluted the acid with a large amount of water and at ten in the evening all the emergency service units were able to leave the scene.
The police will investigate the incident as causing bodily injury through workplace accident.
