He will assume the role during the first half of 2026, with Jan Moström remaining in the position until then.

– With his industrial experience, I am convinced that Johan is the right person to continue developing the very strong position LKAB has built under Jan Moström’s leadership, says chair Anders Borg in a press release.

Latour is a major Swedish industrial and investment company.

– LKAB is not only a driving force for northern Sweden but also holds a strong position and can play a crucial role in several industrial value chains in Europe, which need to be developed both to tackle the climate threat and to increase self-sufficiency, says Menckel in the press release.

Why is LKAB important to the green transition?

LKAB is critical to the green transition for three main reasons:

Producing carbon-free steel: LKAB is a driving force behind HYBRIT, a groundbreaking partnership with SSAB and Vattenfall, aiming to produce fossil-free steel by replacing coal with hydrogen in the steelmaking process. This method could eliminate almost all CO₂ emissions from traditional steel production. HYBRIT is headquartered in Stockholm, with its pioneering production facilities located in Luleå and Gällivare - placing it at the heart of northern Sweden’s green steel revolution.

Mining for the green economy: LKAB is shifting from raw iron ore production to extracting rare earth minerals - critical components for green technologies like wind turbines, electric vehicles, and batteries. In 2023, LKAB announced the discovery of Europe's largest known deposit of rare earth elements in Kiruna.

Sustainable transformation of mining: The company is investing heavily in sustainable mining technologies to reduce the environmental footprint of extraction and processing, aiming to support a circular economy.
