Following the fire at the old dairy in Broänge, questions are mounting about what transpired there. Did the building conceal a cigarette factory? We don't know, but more answers will undoubtedly emerge in time.
The public prosecutor from the Swedish Economic Crime Authority (Ekobrottsmyndighetens) has launched a preliminary investigation into serious economic crime.
Three men have been detained, and on Wednesday, they were remanded in custody, strongly suspected of offences including aggravated tax fraud.
As Norran visits the fire scene and neighbouring villages, life continues as usual. Several cars pass the burned-out building; some crawl past, others drive by more quickly, but no one stops.
A security guard sits in his car just outside the house, within the police cordon. When questioned, he directs inquiries to Avarn's press office or the police.
None of the residents in the area, across any of the neighbouring villages we visit, want to speak openly about the building or their thoughts on the criminal suspicions now linked to the property by prosecutors. All prefer to remain anonymous. They are aware of the fire, and many in the surrounding villages frequently pass the old dairy, which also housed two apartments.
— There have always been cars parked there, but I never gave it much thought. I read the reports of criminal suspicions, but I never thought anything like that was happening, says one person.
Another, who often passes the building, says:
— I'm not surprised. People have been living in the apartments there recently, and I've felt that something wasn't quite right.
The downstairs windows are completely covered, making it impossible to see into any of the rooms.
— So it hasn't been before, but perhaps for the past year, says another person we meet in a different village.
Outside the dairy, several chairs and tables are set up. Another individual testifies that people have been seen sitting there intermittently, and three individuals, a passenger car, and a truck with a trailer have been spotted on the premises. This person says:
— I've been saying for a long time: "What exactly are they doing there?"
Most are aware that the building was previously a dairy, and a few even recall a time when they could shop there.
— It was also a furniture store, says a person raking their lawn.
For a couple of those we spoke with, the suspicions of criminal activity at the dairy came as a complete surprise:
— I was quite surprised when I read about it, but its location might have allowed them to operate freely there, speculates one.
We also learned from several sources that the current owner of the dairy had held an auction on the property at one point and was involved in trading engines and vehicles.
Everyone we met and spoke with finds it sad and regrettable that the house was ravaged by fire, given its rich history.
What do you think will happen to the building now?
— I don't know; it will probably just stand there and decay. It's a shame, says a passer-by.
It was just past one in the afternoon. As we leave Broänge, smoke continued to rise from the old dairy.
