River views vs traffic noise: The trade-off of urban living

People have started moving into the new apartment buildings by the Skellefteå river.
The view from the top floor terrace is impressive, although maybe not for those who suffer from vertigo

The building is located next to the E4 on the south side of the river. Originally, there were no glassed-in balconies because the building used all the permitted space. Glassed balconies count towards this space, unlike open ones.

– We've asked the municipality about getting permission for glazing later, but no decision yet, says Fredrik Westerlund, the business manager.

– Adding glass later is technically possible, he adds. The location was chosen for the river views and closeness to town. Inside, you don't hear much traffic noise, but it's noticeable on the balconies.

Despite the good location, selling the apartments has been slow.

Buyers who did commit got to customise their apartments. In the sold-out top floors, each home is unique with different colours and materials for kitchens, walls, and floors.

The river view is great, and the E4 traffic below is more interesting to watch than annoying, at least from inside thanks to soundproof windows and walls.

However, the open balconies are noisy, and the transparent glass railings might bother some residents and visitors.

Most of the apartments are accessed via open-air walkways.

The plot outside the building is minimal. Here you can see the future entrance path on the right, and on the left side of the stones is land that has been rented from the neighbour, which will soon be returned.

In a few weeks, people will move into the second phase of the U-shaped building. Project manager Patrik Eriksson says they will be ready on time. The white east-facing part is already occupied.

The building has 87 apartments in total and is Nordic Ecolabelled. Local suppliers were used for things like windows from Burträsk, balconies from Fällfors, railings from Ersmark, and steel from Norrlångträsk.
