The food comparison website Matpriskollen has compared the difference between regular prices on 1 June 2025 with 1 June last year. In general the food prices have gone up by about four per cent in a year. However, when it comes to the most common items on the midsummer menu the increase is a bit bigger; five per cent.
Ground coffee, Västerbotten cheese, double cream and sour cream are products that have become more expensive. Especially dairy products have increased in price which means that the cost of the midsummer food goes up. At the same time it is positive that the dairy prices have been stable in the last few months, since February this year, says Ulf Mazur, MD and founder of Matpriskollen.
– Ground coffee has gone up more than anything else – 50 per cent in a year, he says.
Downward trend for price of salmon
Chicken fillets have become cheaper in the last few years and compared to last year the price has gone down by one per cent. The price on sliced, gravad or smoked salmon has gone down – by just over two per cent.
– The salmon campaign prices have gone down lately. There seems to be a price reduction on salmon, says Mazur.
Pickled herring has become somewhat more expensive – up by three per cent compared to last year. Though it is more difficult to say anything about the price of strawberries and baby potatoes. The prices are set locally and there are no central campaigns, according to Mazur.
More expensive strawberries
The strawberry harvest seems to be a bit late this year due to the cold May. The price per litre is currently around SEK 70. Mazur thinks that the price during the midsummer week will be around SEK 100 per litre and at the cheapest two litres for SEK 150. When it comes to baby potatoes he does not think there will be any campaigns for SEK 1 per kilo, the cut price will instead likely be just under SEK 10 per kilo.
The midsummer weekend is a big food holiday which is noticeable in the stores. Many lure people in with campaign prices to get customers to do their shopping in their specific store. Some products may be up to half price. But it pays off to be multi-loyal, says Mazur.

When it comes to alcoholic beverages for the midsummer spread, schnapps has gone up by 0.2 per cent in price and lager has gone up by 0.7 per cent, according to figures from Systembolaget. That applies to the price development from 1 March 2024 to 1 March this year.
