Had severe breathing difficulties after emission at Northvolt

An operator at Northvolt experienced severe breathing difficulties after having been exposed to what the company thinks was sulphuric acid gas last week, according to a report to the Work Environment Authority.

According to the emergency services the accident took place in premises belonging to the company Revolt, which was closed down earlier this year.

On Wednesday evening last week the emergency services received an alarm call due to a suspected hazardous emission in a building at the Northvolt industrial area. According to the emergency services it involved 300 litres of sulphuric acid in liquid form and at the scene of the event, the person was suspected to have inhaled the fumes.

The accident report that Northvolt submitted to the Work Environment Authority states that an operator experienced severe breathing difficulties in connection with the event. The difficulties are described as ”an asthma attack but not quite”. The person was not able to get their breath back to normal out in the fresh air and an ambulance was called. 

The operator was brought to hospital, according to the report, and got to stay there overnight for observation.

Shortly after the event the police announced that it will investigate the accident as causing bodily injury through workplace accident.
