SMHI issues yellow warning as storm system approaches

Another storm is approaching Västerbotten.
The Polish cyclone Karl-Heinz is expected to reach the county this afternoon, bringing heavy thunderstorms and downpours.
Sweden’s weather agency SMHI has issued a yellow warning.
– It’s a continuous rain system. The entire area will receive rain, says meteorologist Torbjörn Simann.

The warning extends as far north as Arjeplog.

SMHI has issued a yellow warning for torrential rain that brings with it areas of heavy thunderstorms, affecting all six Norran municipalities. The meteorological institute warns that flooding may occur and that stormwater systems may be impacted.

Traffic may also be affected, as roads and underpasses could experience large accumulations of water.

The warning is valid from 1:00 PM on Tuesday afternoon until 11:00 PM. It applies to large parts of Norsjö, Malå, Robertsfors, and Arvidsjaur municipalities, as well as parts of Skellefteå and Arjeplog municipalities.

The inland areas of Skellefteå municipality are affected by the warning – Jörn, Boliden, and villages west of Burträsk.

Torbjörn Simann, a meteorologist at SMHI, confirms that it is the powerful low-pressure system Karl-Heinz that is making its entrance over the Norran area.

– It is currently over the Baltic Sea and is on its way up over the country. It will bring significant amounts of rain to many areas, especially the eastern parts of the country such as Gotland, eastern Svealand, and eastern Norrland.

This is an extensive rain area where the amount of precipitation can vary locally. There may be thunderstorms in some places, and the amount of rain can be exceptionally large there, explains Torbjörn Simann.

The coast is not affected by the yellow warning, but it is also expected to be rainy here. The greatest chance of rain in Skellefteå is between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM and late tonight, according to the current forecast.

Will it be like what we've seen lately, where it can rain on one side of the city and be dry on the other?

– No, it is a continuous rain area. The entire area will get rain. It will not be like before where we have seen localised thunderstorms with large variations in rainfall.

Despite the precipitation over eastern Norrland in the coming days, temperatures will not be significantly affected. The forecast calls for daytime temperatures in Skellefteå to be around 25 degrees Celsius.

This is because the air mass is warm and humid, the meteorologist explains.

– There will not be a huge cooling effect from the precipitation. The thick clouds mean there will be no solar heating, but because the air mass is warm, the temperatures will not fall.

The precipitation area that SMHI warns about on Tuesday is moving north and widening westward over the inland of Västerbotten and Norrbotten. But as the rain area grows, it is also weakening.

– Precipitation is decreasing at the same time, and it doesn't look like there will be any amounts that we need to issue further warnings about.
