The explosion occurred late Saturday evening in a cleaning machine adjacent to Northvolt's production area. Several fire department units, ambulances and police cars were called to the Northvolt area, according to Norran.

– The automatic fire alarm was triggered by this machine. There was a fire in the machine and it was quite an intense incident. When the fire department arrived at the scene, the fire had already been extinguished by the automatic sprinkler system, said Sanna Bäckström, a spokeswoman for Northvolt.

The case is being investigated by the police as a possible violation of occupational health and safety regulations resulting in bodily harm, and is being led by prosecutors from the National Environmental and Occupational Health Unit.

The injured man was taken to Uppsala University Hospital early Sunday morning, where his injuries are considered "life-threatening".
